What is Olympic Weightlifting?

Two movements. Both Olympic.

Olympic weightlifting consists of two disciplines: the Snatch and the Clean & Jerk. Both bring the barbell from the floor overhead in a competition-precise line: the Snatch in one continuous movement, the Clean & Jerk in two phases, first to the shoulders, then overhead.

In competition you get three attempts per discipline; the highest valid weight counts. The movements combine maximal strength, explosive power and technique, and look easy until you try them yourself for the first time.

Who is Weightlifting for?

Lift clean first, then add weight.

You start where you are. What you can't do yet, you learn.

  • Beginners

You've never brought a barbell overhead. We build the Snatch and Clean & Jerk up with you step by step.

  • Advanced lifters

You know the movements and want to add kilos. Your coach refines technical details, the pull and the catch position.

  • CrossFitters with a lift focus

You train CrossFit and want to improve your lifts on purpose. The lifting session gives you the focus the CrossFit session can't.

How we train at Trave

Small group, your own coach, your pace.

On the weekly schedule: a fixed Olympic lifting session with a coach. Current times on the schedule.

Small group: you get correction and encouragement instead of getting lost in a big group. Your coach knows your weak spots.

At your pace: from the technique bar to a personal best. Beginners and advanced lifters train in the same session, each at their own weight.

Equipment

Everything you need to lift.

01Lifting platforms

Dedicated wooden floors with a rubber edge, so you can drop the barbell without a second thought.

02Olympic barbells

Women's bars (15 kg) and men's bars (20 kg) with rotating sleeves for clean pulls.

03Weights

Rubber plates (bumper plates) in all common increments: droppable, robust, competition-grade.

04Chalk

Liquid and solid chalk for grip, when the bar wants to slip out of your hands.

Still on the fence?

Common questions.

Do I need weightlifting experience?

No. We build you up from the technique bar. If you've never snatched or done a Clean & Jerk, that's exactly where you start. Your coach shows you every step.

How heavy do people lift?

As heavy as suits you. Beginners work on technique with light weights, advanced lifters go for a personal best. Your coach adjusts that for you.

Is once a week enough?

For building and improving technique, yes. Anyone training competitively combines the lifting session with two or three strength sessions a week.

What shoes do I need?

Shoes with a firm, flat sole, not running shoes. If you don't have any yet, we'll lend you lifting shoes for the trial session.

What sets this apart from a regular gym?

Dedicated lifting platforms with a wooden floor, one coach per session, a small group. And a focus on clean technique over fast kilos. Regular gyms lack either the equipment or the coaching for the Snatch and Clean & Jerk.
